Derbyshire County Council – video production campaign

The brief:

Derbyshire County Council wanted a series of TV ads that can be integrated within there existing print and online marketing campaign. The ads needed to fit in with the look of the print advertising using the clean white background, the strap line and the the concept.

The creative:

Working with a Derbyshire based creative agency and the County Council we came up with a number of concepts that would bring the print based images to life whilst keeping them on brand and recognizable as part of a larger campaign.

We wanted the adverts to have a story that the viewer can follow, which when working with 20 seconds of edited time meant for a lot of storyboards and bad acting to test out the run length. To make these work we decided that instead of just cutting to each actor we needed something visual that would move the story and keep a consistent pace. Once the concepts and storyboards were approved we filmed the adverts over 1 day and then went straight into post production where we added animation, colouring and grading and ready for broadcast output.

The outcome:

We filmed and edited 5 adverts in total looking to initially use two and then a further two later on in the year. The adverts were approved and put through clearing to ensure all legal advertising standard requirements were met. We worked with the ad buyers to ensure all deadlines were met. The adverts went out on ITV East Midlands and ITV Yorkshire at prime time slots over a period of two weeks and were viewed by over 2 million people. They were also used online on ITV player and the Derbyshire County Council website.

The Project:

We were approached by a record label who were looking for a video production company to produce the latest music video for up and coming sensation Blee. His music is currently being sold worldwide and we were given a brief, a studio location that involves models. Because of the style of the song we created a fast paced edit to suit the track. Motion graphics were used at key points throughout the video as well as digital grading to enhance the look. The video was shot in High Definition and output for broadcast use.

Miss 600 – Twist

The Project:

Fantastic new group Miss600 approached Dynomite Productions to create their debut music video for the hit single twist.

The album and single are currently on sale as is the video, which is getting a great response from many different territories.

The record label were so pleased with our work that they have asked us to produce Miss600’s next video. The video was shot in High Definition and output for broadcast use.

The Establishment – music video campaign

The brief

Up and coming band The Establishment asked us to create a music video for their debut song ‘Jennifer Jones’. This music video features football legends, Stuart Pearce, Les Ferdinand, Des Walker and Teddy Sheringham. It also features a cameo from Coronation Street actor Chris Barlow. We had a limited shooting schedule and so had to make sure we were able to capture all of the footage in the allotted time. The establishment wanted to be shown in a studio environment and have a very natural un staged look.

The creative

Working with the band we created the concept, which we then story boarded. The production involved two filming locations in Nottingham and London and we needed to arrange around 30-40 extras to be involved. By using the idea of having a main actress who the song is about it allowed us to cut between the band and the actress as she interacts with the cameo roles. We spent a day with the band in the studio and filmed a lot of behind the scenes type footage to allow us to get the natural response.

We used a mixture of mediums to film on and even used some footage shot by the band on their i phones. As the finished film was designed to have a grainy gritty look the mixed mediums worked well and gave a very contemporary feel to the video.

The outcome

The video was used as one of the main publicity and marketing tools for the launch of the album and the single. We have also gone onto make a further two videos and also a behind the scenes promo for them.

Digital grading and manipulating the image

Just a quick blog update today. We are currently working on the edit for a new music video. It was filmed in an old army tent and had actors and soldiers in costume as the band played around them.

Part of the song needed a dark and desaturated look to give a more intense feeling and fit in with the pace. Below you can see two stills one which was shot on the day with a P2 High definition camera in its raw format, and next to it you can see the image once it has been graded.

The other part to the song is going to have an aged 8mm look to it, the reason for this is the  warm nostalgic feeling that 8mm creates.

Q. So, why is digital grading important?

A. Because its better to be a needle in a haystack, than a haystack.
